The Barcelona chair is a design originally created for royalty in the German Pavilion Building at the Barcelona World Fair in 1929. Its creator, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, was inspired by both the folding chairs of the Pharaohs and x-shaped footstools of the Romans. The Barcelona chair was the talk of the modern design world and quickly gained a reputation as being a design worthy of kings.

The Barcelona chair is manufactured individually and ideally takes about 40 hours to produce. It combines high quality, hand sewn leather with a chrome or stainless steel frame. Mies Van Der Rohe redesigned the Barcelona chair in 1950, giving it its seamless, sleek design which is admired to this day. After 80 years in production, the Barcelona chair’s beautiful design is still considered a timeless addition to the world of modern furniture. It was honored and given a Museum of Modern Art Award for design in 1977. Only few changes have been made since the original Barcelona chairs were revealed in the German Pavilion, and today they can be found in banks and big corporate reception halls.
